We are what we DO repeatedly!
Habit building is a crucial aspect of personal development and can help improve productivity and overall well-being. My several personal and professional successes have been possible (or made easy) through good habits.
I'm not talented or gifted and have no superpowers. Everything that I am doing well today, like — waking up at 5 AM, reading 36 books a year, etc., was hard and tedious for me initially. But, by using the proper technique and method, it's not difficult to build good habits or eliminate bad ones.
I have read several books on habit building, but James Clear, author of the best-selling book Atomic Habits offers practical and actionable advice for forming new habits.
Here are 10 tips for building new habits inspired by his book, with examples for each tip:
Make it obvious: Make your new habit part of your environment and make it obvious when it is time to perform the habit. Example: If your goal is to exercise regularly, put your workout clothes and shoes near your bed, so they are obvious when you wake up.
Make it attractive: Make the habit enjoyable or associated with something you enjoy to increase motivation. Example: If your goal is to read more, create a cozy reading nook with comfortable seating and good lighting. Or go to a nice cafe and treat yourself each time to show up for the reading.
Make it easy: Start with a small and achievable goal to make the habit easier to stick to. Example: If your goal is to meditate regularly, start with a 5-minute meditation each day and gradually increase the time.
Make it satisfying: Celebrate small victories and track your progress to stay motivated. Example: If your goal is to save money, keep track of your savings progress in a savings journal or habit tracker app and celebrate small victories, like reaching a savings milestone.
Have an identity: Connect your new habit to your values and personal identity to increase commitment. Example: If your goal is to eat healthier, adopt the identity of a health-conscious person and make healthy eating a part of your values and beliefs.
Stack habits: Incorporate new habits into existing routines to make them easier to stick to. Example: If your goal is to drink more water, stack the habit of drinking a glass of water before each meal.
Design your environment: Control your environment to reduce temptations and make it easier to stick to your habits. Example: If your goal is to reduce screen time, remove devices from your bedroom and create designated technology-free zones in your home.
Create a system: Make your habits a part of a larger system, like exercise and healthy eating, for greater success. Example: If your goal is to reduce stress, create a self-care system that includes exercise, healthy eating, and mindfulness practices.
Get an accountability partner: Find someone who can hold you accountable and provide support. Example: If your goal is to learn a new skill, find a mentor or accountability partner who can provide guidance and support.
Focus on progress, not perfection: Remember that building new habits takes time and effort, and it's important to focus on progress, not perfection. Example: If your goal is to be more productive, focus on making small, incremental improvements each day rather than aiming for perfection.
Key takeaway: building new habits is not about willpower but about creating a system and environment that makes it easier to stick to habits.
