Today, I want to share three pieces of advice to help introverts succeed in their personal and professional lives.
75% of the population is introvert.
I'm also a part of this tribe. As an introvert, we suffer from self-critic, self-confidence, and self-doubts.
We have struggled as introverts because we were told to compete or behave like extroverts.Β
That's a big mistake!Β
But things have changed since I started to follow this advice.Β
Now, I'm less self-critical and appreciate "who I am" more.
Here are three pieces of advice for any introvert!
Advice #1 β Overcome the Spotlight EffectΒ
The "Spotlight Effect" refers to a common psychological phenomenon in which we tend to overestimate the extent to which other people are observing or noticing our actions, behaviors, appearance, or achievements.Β
The term was coined by a group of psychologists in 2000, following aΒ research studyΒ that asked a student to wear an embarrassing shirt and estimate how many of their classmates noticed it. The student estimated that 50% of classmates would have noticed when in reality, only 25% did.
From this, we can take away two important points:
We tend to think that everyone is watching us and noticing every little detail, but in reality, people are often much less attentive than we think.
Even if people do notice something about us, they usually forget about it quickly and move on to other things.
Advice #2 β Follow Your Energy
Introverts tend to feel more energized by solitary activities like reading, writing, or spending time alone in nature. Group activities or social events may drain their energy, making them feel tired or stressed. To manage your energy levels, make a list of activities that energize you and those that drain you. This will help you to plan your day or week in a way that maximizes your energy levels.
For example, if you know that you have to attend a social event that will be draining, plan some alone time afterward to recharge your batteries. This could be as simple as taking a walk or reading a book.
Advice #3 β Embrace Your Introvert Superpowers
As an introvert, you may not be the most outgoing person in the room, but you likely have strengths that extroverts don't have. You may be a great listener, a deep thinker, or an excellent problem solver. Focus on these strengths and use them to your advantage.
