I Went From 0 to 30 Books a Year With These 5 Reading Tips π
Issue #3 : If book reading is important to you, but you are struggling, these tips will help and inspire you on your journey to build a book reading habit.
A confession:
I never loved reading books growing up.
The first book I read was in 2011, and it was Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson.
I knew book reading was important for my growth, but it felt like a slow and boring way to learn especially because I didnβt love reading books.
But then, in 2017, I got obsessed with reading books!
β I read 8 books in that year and 15 books in 2018.
β In 2020, I read 42 books in one year.
β Within 5 years, I read 130+ books.
β Now I read 25-30 books a year.
Book reading has helped me:
β Growing my business by 65% year-over-year.
β Taking good care of my health and overall wellness.
β Become more inclusive and compassionate.
β Improving the quality of my thoughts and actions.
β Getting better at coping with my anxiety and stress.
β To master the art of learning.
β Grow more intellectually and spiritually.
β Boost my confidence and competence.
β Increased my productivity and efficiency
Here are the 5 tips that helped me with my book reading habit:
#1 Reading should be a daily practice, not a goal.
β Make reading a daily habit and part of your routine.
β Think of reading as a relaxing break, not homework.
β Commit to reading a few pages, a few chapters, or for a few minutes daily.
β Consistency > Quality and Quantity
Quality will improve gradually if you stay consistent. And small, consistent efforts over time will beat the Quantity.
If you read 30 mins everyday = 30 pages
1 week = 210 pages = 1 book
1 month = 900 pages = 3-4 books
1 Year = ~36-48 books
#2 Try Audiobooks. βοΈ
β Listening to audiobooks is much more effective and fun compare to actual books if you are just getting started.
β Audiobooks work best because you can listen to them anywhere and anytime, doing any mindless activities: walking, biking, commuting, eating, etc.
β Start with listening to biographies and novels on audiobooks.
β Practice listening to podcasts if you are new to audiobooks.
#3 Read Plan Like A Meal Plan.
Morning β Motivational Book, Biographies of your role models.
Daytime β Skill Development, Personal Development.
Bedtime β Spirituality, Relationship, Fun, Entertaining.
Weekend β Learning about Health, Finance, Leadership, and professional developments.
#4 If reading books feels boring, try this:
β If you are not hooked after two chapters, pick another book.
β Feel free to skip a chapter or section if you donβt find it enlightening.
β Your taste and interest in books change over time; go back to old books.
β Making reading a fun experience by going to a new place or library.
#5 My Advice for the Book Format.
Paperback β Weekend reading, at-home reading, books with many graphs, charts, stats, pictures, etc.; books with great visuals and arts.
Audiobook β Biography, Novel, best when traveling, commuting, or doing mindless activities.
Kindle β Good for spiritual books, when traveling, and bedtime book reading.
Book Summaries β Read after you finish a book or read before you buy the actual book.
[On a different note, hereβs something Iβm excited to share to help you boost your productivity and performance through better writing in 2025]
How Samir, an Engineer, Transformed His Career with One Skill
Samir wasnβt a writer. He was a software engineer, great at building things but struggled when it came to explaining ideas, pitching projects, or sharing updates.
After being passed over for a promotion, he realized something: It wasnβt his technical skills holding him backβit was his writing.
He signed up for a copywriting course, thinking it would help him write better emails. (It did that and more.)
In a few months, Samirβs emails were clear and persuasive. His project proposals got approved faster. He became the go-to person for internal presentations. And, yesβhe finally got that promotion.
Why? Because writing is a meta-skill.
Whether youβre an engineer, designer, accountant, or manager, writing impacts everything. Emails, reports, pitches, presentationsβgood writing makes you more productive, more effective, and more valuable.
Hereβs the good news: WRITING IS A SKILL. You donβt βhave itβ, you learn it.
If you can improve only one skill in 2025, make it writing.
Iβve spent over $5,000 on different writing courses, and out of all of them, I highly recommend CopyThatβan email-based copywriting course you can complete in just 30 minutes a day for 10 days.
